This week Yvette Torres-Rahman, Partnership Director at Business Fights Poverty, interviews Zelda Bentham, Group Head of Sustainability at Aviva plc.

Aviva was the first insurance company to become carbon neutral nearly 10 years ago.

Zelda recollects a speech by the Prince of Wales in which he challenged the insurance industry to be more proactive about climate change.

Zelda goes on to explain how their investment in ClimateCare’s LifeStraw Carbon for Water project and Clean Cookstoves projects is not just an environmental initiative. She explains how supporting these projects makes business sense delivering social impacts as well as carbon reductions, and helping reduce the increased risk that climate change poses to their customers.

Aviva is keen to understand its impact in terms of the sustainable development goals soon to be launched, not just regarding climate impact but also the impact on the lives of the individuals benefiting from LifeStraw water filters and Clean Cookstoves and argues that measuring this impact helps make the business case for continued support of these initiatives
