At Youth Business International (YBI), the only organisation dedicated to youth entrepreneurship on a global scale, we believe that young entrepreneurs are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they’re the changemakers of today.
In our rapidly evolving world, young people are stepping up as innovators, driving social change, and forging paths in entrepreneurship like never before. Yet, despite their potential, many face daunting challenges in transforming their ideas into thriving businesses. Increasingly, young entrepreneurs are launching ventures that prioritise green and social missions. This shift highlights the urgent need for robust support systems that can help them turn their visions into reality.
That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of our Youth Entrepreneurship Framework in collaboration with the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN). This dynamic new framework is designed to empower policymakers and support organisations with actionable strategies to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs.
The Youth Entrepreneurship Framework is the result of extensive collaboration and research, drawing insights from interviews with experts across the global youth entrepreneurship ecosystem. This includes voices from UNCTAD, Orange Corners, the World YMCA, and many more who are dedicated to empowering youth. By harnessing these diverse perspectives, we’ve created a comprehensive guide that not only highlights the current landscape but also charts a course forward.
This framework is more than just a report; it serves as a call to action for leaders at all levels. It outlines 50 actionable recommendations that can be implemented by policymakers and support organisations to create an environment where youth entrepreneurship can thrive. Each recommendation is tied to real-world examples from GEN’s Atlas, the largest compendium of entrepreneurship policies worldwide, providing a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for driving effective change.
The framework identifies four key trends shaping the future of youth entrepreneurship:
- Necessity-Based Entrepreneurship: In the face of rising youth unemployment, many are starting businesses out of necessity. Supporting this entrepreneurship is vital for economic resilience.
- Green Entrepreneurship: As the world moves towards sustainability, young entrepreneurs are leading the charge. Tailored support and policies are essential to nurture these innovative ventures.
- Meaningful Work: Today’s Gen Z and Millennial business owners prioritise meaningful work that aligns with their values and makes a positive impact on society.
- Community-Driven Initiatives: Young people are increasingly motivated to launch businesses that contribute to their communities, focusing on social value and impact.
However, barriers remain that prevent youth from reaching their full entrepreneurial potential:
- Skills Development: Access to skills training is crucial for empowering young entrepreneurs.
- Complex Business Environments: Navigating complicated regulations can deter youth from pursuing entrepreneurship.
- Access to Finance: Securing funding and maintaining financial health are ongoing challenges for young entrepreneurs.
- Support Services: Comprehensive support throughout the entrepreneurial journey is essential for success.
To effectively address these barriers, the framework provides tailored recommendations aligned with each stage of the entrepreneurial journey.
As we roll out this framework, we invite you to join us in championing the cause of youth entrepreneurship. Together, we can create an ecosystem where young innovators are empowered to turn their ideas into impactful businesses.
