What do business leaders need to know about the future of work?
Thank you to those who entered!
Futuremakers answered the question “What do business leaders need to know about the future of work?”

Their answers explored: What they think business leaders need to understand about young people; How to attract the best young talent; What skills can young people bring to business; How to better support young entrepreneurs; and many other themes! (See competition rules below).

During the first round of judging, the shortlist of the top qualifying entries was judged by:

The Announcement
The competition awards will be announced during the 2021 Futuremakers Forum, the annual event by Standard Chartered which brings together young people, businesses, NGOs, and employers to share, collaborate and learn.
This year’s Forum is all about creating spaces for young people to find out more about gaining the skills you want and learning what employers are looking for. There will be advice sessions and opportunities to connect with business decision makers and employers. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Business Fights Poverty Ltd (“Business Fights Poverty,” “we,” “us,” our “our”), a certified B Corp company incorporated in England and Wales with company number 05693777, and registered offices at 585a Fulham Road, London, SW6 5UA, United Kingdom, is the promoter of a free to enter prize competition entitled The Futuremakers Forum Competition 2021 (the "Competition").

COMPETITION OUTLINE

2.1. The Competition is open to Entrants aged 16 to 35, who qualify as past or present beneficiaries (see Article 5) of the Futuremakers by Standard Chartered initiative (“Futuremakers”).

2.2. Entrants to the Competition (“Entrants”) are asked to submit (one of) an original piece of prose, a poem or short story that has as its goal to advise, inspire and influence business leaders (the “Competition Entry”). A word limit of 250 words will apply. Include in your submission the words “I am a #Futuremaker because.... and I believe business leaders need to know..."

2.3. Upon review against the set of criteria outlined in Articles 6(1)(a) to 6(1)(e) below, one or more (successive) judging panel(s) overseen by an independent adjudicator will award the 65 highest scoring entries (“the Competition Winners”) a competition prize.

2.4. The Competition Winners will receive as their prize a redeemable credit that can be used to extinguish or offset the purchase price of online skills training from a number of participating accreditation providers. The monetary value of these credits will extend to up to $750 for the 5 highest-scoring entries; up to $500 for the following 10 runners-up; and up to $250 for the final 50 runners-up.

4.1. The Competition will run from 10.00 am United Kingdom time (GMT+1) on 18 May 2021 (the “Opening Date”) to 5pm United Kingdom time (GMT+1) on Wednesday the 23rd June 2021 (the “Closing Date”) inclusive.

4.2. By clicking on the submit your entry button on the Competition website page Entrants will be directed to submit their entry on this page  https://www.research.net/r/Futuremakers2021. To be valid, entries must be received by no later than 5pm United Kingdom time (GMT+1) on Wednesday the 23rd June 2021.

4.3. Unfortunately, all Competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified.

ELIGIBILITY

5.1. The Competition is open to past and present beneficiaries of the programmes operated under the Futuremakers initiative, notwithstanding whether these programmes were delivered, controlled and/or operated by Standard Chartered, the Standard Chartered Foundation, Business Fights Poverty or another charity or organisation who is an official partner to the Futuremakers initiative.

5.2. To qualify as a beneficiary of the Futuremakers initiative, Entrants must have participated in an activity or programme provided under one of the following: Futuremakers’ education programme, “Goal,”  Futuremakers’ employability skills programme “Youth to Work”,  Futuremakers’ entrepreneurial skills programme “Entrepreneurs for Growth”, Futuremakers’ Women in Technology (“WIT”) scheme, or a local charity partner activity that currently is or was funded, wholly or in part, under the Futuremakers initiative by Standard Chartered.

5.3. Entrants must detail on their entry form which charity partner they received the invitation from to participate in the Competition. Business Fights Poverty reserves the right to reject, according to its sole discretion, any entry it deems not to have evidenced a beneficial link between the Entrant and any Futuremakers’ activities conducted by the charity partner.

5.4. The Competition is open to all past and present beneficiaries of such programmes aged between 16 and 35 as of the 15th July 2021, except:

  • (a) For Entrants below the age of 18, please see article 5(5) below;
  • (b) Employees of the Standard Chartered Foundation, Standard Chartered, Business Fights Poverty, and any other organisation that may be deemed to have a beneficial, commercial or equitable interest in the Futuremakers initiative. This exclusion applies equally to all employees of these respective organisation’s holding, subsidiary or group companies;
  • (c) Employees of agents or suppliers of Standard Chartered Foundation, Standard Chartered, Business Fights Poverty  or its holding or subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the Competition or its administration;
  • (d) Members of the immediate families or households of (a) and (b) above.

5.5. Individuals aged 16 and 17 will only be eligible to enter the Competition providing each of the following conditions is satisfied:

  • (a) They must obtain written parental or guardian consent to enter the Competition;
  • (b) Their parent or guardian has ensured that they have read the Rules and understood their implications;
  • (c) They complete and submit the Competition entry form held here https://businessfightspoverty.org/futuremakers-competition-2021/  in the presence of their parent and guardian;
  • (d) The Entrant’s parent or guardian provides an email address or telephone number on the Competition Entry form at which they may be contacted between 11th June 2021 and 15th July 2021, with a view to both corroborating their knowledge of, and consent to, the Entrant’s participation, and providing Competition updates of which they need to be aware.

5.6. In entering the Competition, the Entrant warrants that they are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize that they win. Business Fights Poverty reserves the right to require an Entrant to provide proof that they were eligible to enter the Competition.

5.7. Business Fights Poverty will not accept Competition entries that are:

  • (a) automatically generated by computer;
  • (b) completed by third parties or in bulk;
  • (c) illegible, have been altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with;
  • not the author’s own creation; or
  • (d) Incomplete.

HOW TO ENTER
06
6.1. To prepare an entry to the Competition, an individual must:

  • (a) Produce an original piece of prose, a poem or short story that seeks to advise, inspire and influence business leaders;
  • (b) Ensure that the contents of their submission, including the ideas it expresses and the text it employs, are the Entrant’s original work with no incorporation of pre-existing characters, brand names, company names, or trademarked or copyrighted material (“Names, trademarks and copyrighted material”).
  • (c) Include in their submission the words “I am a Futuremaker because… and I believe business leaders need to know…”  filling in the sentence with their own words.
  • (d) Ensure that their submission is no more than 250 words in length. The 14  words in the template (i.e. “I am a Futuremaker...”) provided in 6(1)(c) will count towards this word length.

6.2. To enter the Competition, an individual must have access to the internet. If you do not have readily available access to the internet at home, please take into account that it may take you three working days or more to find an alternative source of free online access. Submissions received after the Closing Date will not be accepted in any circumstances, including where an individual cites limited internet access.

6.3. To enter, an individual must:
  • (a) Visit the Business Fights Poverty dedicated Competition website  page https://businessfightspoverty.org/futuremakers-competition-2021/
  • (b) Scroll down so as to review the Terms and Conditions (“T&Cs”) of the Competition provided on the Competition website page, and ensure they have understood its provisions. If the individual is prepared to accept the T&Cs, scroll back up and click the “Submit your Entry” button;
  • (c) Complete the online entry form therein provided before 5pm UK time (GMT+1) on Wednesday the 23rd June 2021;
  • (d) Individuals aged 16 or 17 must complete steps (b) and (c) in the presence of their parent or guardian. In addition, they must procure and keep a signed and dated record of the written consent of their parent or guardian prior to entry.

6.4. By submitting an entry, Entrants aged 18 to 35 agree to be bound by these terms & conditions. Where an Entrant is aged 16 or 17, by submitting an entry, the Entrant’s parent or guardian agrees that they and the Entrant be bound by these terms & conditions.

6.5. There is a limit of one entry per Futuremakers beneficiary past and present. If more than one entry is received from a Futuremakers beneficiary, we will accept the first entry received and disregard the others. An exception may be made where multiple entries are received in the name of an Entrant, where these additional entries are joint submissions with individuals who would otherwise lack the capacity to enter the Competition.

6.6. There is no fee or charge to register on the website and enter the Competition. Business Fights Privacy does not use Competition entries for the purpose of obtaining commercial remuneration from third parties, such as by selling Entrants’ data to commercial third parties.

6.7. By entering the Competition, Entrants agree to Business Fights Poverty sending them an invitation to attend the Futuremakers Forum 2021, newsletters and other content or events which Business Fights Poverty may deem within its legitimate interest to send to Entrants. Entrants can unsubscribe from the Business Fights Poverty database at any time.

6.8. Business Fights Poverty may reject entries which in its reasonable opinion:

  • (a) contain any content that is unreasonably offensive or could reflect negatively on the name, reputation, or goodwill of the Futuremakers initiative, and any company associated with the Competition, including its employees, suppliers, agents and/or volunteers;
  • (b) includes trademarks or copyright material not owned by the Entrant or used without the rights owner's prior written permission, or to which it could not be reasonably estimated that there is a Fair Use provision;
  • (c) defames, misrepresents, or insults other people, identities or companies.

6.9. Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation, including their parent and subsidiary companies,  agents, suppliers, employees and/or volunteers, as well as any of company associated with the Competition will not accept:
  • (a) responsibility for Competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, or failed to be processed and/or recorded regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of equipment failure, human error, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or
  • (b) proof of posting or transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the Competition;
  • (c) entries submitted via any other means than the dedicated Competition website page https://businessfightspoverty.org/futuremakers-competition-2021/ ;
  • (d) liability for any interrupted or non-secure access to the dedicated Competition website page https://businessfightspoverty.org/futuremakers-competition-2021/ .

6.10. The Competition will be limited to a maximum of 1,000 entries. Entries will be registered on a first-come first-served basis. Should this 1,000 limit be reached prior to the Closing Date, Business Fights Poverty will disable the submission link and publish on the competition website page a statement that further entries will no longer be accepted. Business Fights Poverty provides no warranty that any entries received after this communication will be submitted to the Competition. It is suggested that prospective Entrants check the Competition website page on a regular basis for updates.

6.11. Business Fights Poverty reserves the right to disqualify any Entrant who has been found to be in breach of any of these entry conditions, or any other terms and conditions, and may still nevertheless enforce its right to disqualify that person and require the return of the prize or the reimbursement of its monetary equivalent even where a Prize has actually been awarded and/or provided to the Entrant or Competition Winner in question.

JUDGING PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

7.1. Valid entries (subject to moderation) will be judged in the first round by a panel of senior Business Fights Poverty staff chaired by an independent judge or adjudicator. The entries will be assessed in accordance with the following assessment criteria:

  • (a) Creativity of expression or presentation (20%);
  • (b) Clarity of message (20%);
  • (c) Inspirational power (20%);
  • (d) Originality of point of view expressed (20%);
  • (e) Distinctiveness of ideas and concepts presented (20%).

7.2. This first judging panel will decide which entries should be put forward to the second stage of judging. The first judging round will select the 65 best entries.

7.3 The top 15 verified entries of the 65 best entries will go through from the first round of judging to the second round of judging.

7.4. In the second judging stage, a judging panel chaired by an independent adjudicator and composed of representatives from Standard Chartered, NGOs and the corporate community will review the top 15 entries of the 65 that passed through the first round. Using the same criteria itemised in 7.1(a) to 7.1(e) above, the panel will proceed to rank the top entries from 1 to 15.

7.5. No warranties are made that the decisions of the first and/or second judging panel will be conducted according to the standard of skill and care of a professionally-trained adjudicator. The decision of the panel of judges will be final and uncontestable.

7.6. A list of the names of the judges will be made viewable at: https://businessfightspoverty.org/futuremakers-competition-2021/ from 23rd June 2021 onwards.

THE PRIZE
08
8.1. The Prize consists of redeemable credits that can be used to extinguish or offset the purchase price of online skills training (maximum of one course per person) from a number of participating accreditation providers (see Article 8.4. below).

8.2. The top 5 scoring Entrants will each receive credits of a redeemable value of up to $750; the next 10 will receive credits of a redeemable value of up to $500; and the next 50 runners-up will each receive credits of a redeemable value of up to $250.

8.3. The top 5 scoring Entrants will also be awarded an invitation and platform to share their ideas with business leaders and decision-makers at the global Futuremakers Forum 2021, taking place online between July 13 to July 15 2021.

8.4. The Prize, which consists of credits to extinguish or offset the purchase price of online skills training from a number of participating accreditation providers, is supplied by Standard Chartered, a company incorporated in England with limited liability under company number 966425 and registered offices at 1 Basinghall Avenue, London, EC2V 5DD (the “Supplier”). Business Fights Poverty and Standard Chartered reserve the right to replace the Prize with an alternative Prize of equal or higher value from another Supplier.

8.5. Instructions on how to redeem the credits will be supplied in writing to the Competition Winners. However, the responsibility for redeeming the credits rests with the Competition Winners. This includes satisfying prior to their expiry date any instructions or requirements needed to redeem the credits, as well as seeking assistance from relevant accreditation providers should a credit be non-functional.

8.6. Once the Competition Winner is awarded the credits, the risk of loss and title for the credits passes to the Competition Winner.  As the proprietor of the credits, the Competition Winner will be solely responsible for credits that are unredeemed, lost, stolen, destroyed or used without your permission.

8.7. Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation, including their parent and subsidiary companies,  agents, suppliers, employees and/or volunteers, as well as any company associated with the Competition make no express or implied warranties in relation to the credits including warranties of merchantability or its ability to be redeemed against a particular online skills course or preferred course date.

8.8. The credits must be redeemed within 12 months of receipt and in no case later than 26th July 2022. If not used on or before 26th July 2022, the credits will automatically expire and have no value.

8.9. The prizes are not negotiable or transferable. No cash alternative will be provided.

COMPETITION WINNERS 
09
9.1. The decision of the judging panels are final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

9.2. The Competition Winners will be notified from Monday 5th July 2021 by email, as per the contact details provided in their entry. Business Fights Poverty may need to make reasonable modifications to the winning texts, however, the texts which are used in any Competition output or publicity shall be inspired by the winning texts of the Competition.

9.3. In the event of any Competition Winner being unable to be contacted, after reasonable attempts have been made, or if any Competition Winner is found to be in breach of the rules or fails to take up their prize for any reason including but not limited to illness, unavailability, inability to obtain leave of absence, or difficulties obtaining a doctor’s certificate station their fitness of participate, Business Fights Poverty reserves the right to offer the prize to a runner-up. A final Prize Award will be made by 26th July 2021 at the latest.

9.4. Please note that Prizes may not be claimed by third parties on a Competition Winner or runner-up’s behalf.

9.5. Business Fights Poverty does not accept any responsibility if you do not accept the prize.

9.6. All Entrants regardless of whether they are a Competition winner or a runner-up are invited to the Futuremakers Forum 2021 and will receive an email explaining how to participate.

9.7. Entries cannot be returned to Entrants.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND RIGHTS RESERVED
10
10.1. Insofar as is permitted by law, the judges, the independent reviewer of the process, Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered, Standard Chartered Foundation and any other affiliate charity, NGO or organisation of the Futuremakers initiative, will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss (whether direct, indirect, incidental or consequential),  property or reputational damage, personal injury, disappointment or death occurring as a result of participating in the Competition, engaging with its communications, taking up the prize or participating in the Futuremakers Forum 2021. This exclusion of liability shall also apply to these entities’ group, parent and subsidiary companies, their suppliers, employees, agents, distributors, resellers, and franchisees.

10.2. In accordance with Entrants’ statutory rights, this exclusion will not apply where any such loss, damage, personal injury, disappointment or death are caused by the negligence of these organisations’ employees or agents.

FORCE MAJEURE 
11
11.1. If an act, omission, event or circumstance occurs which is beyond the reasonable control of, or could not be reasonably foreseen by Business Fights Poverty, and this prevents Business Fights Poverty from complying with these terms and conditions, Business Fights Poverty will not be liable for any failure to perform or delay in performing its obligations.

OWNERSHIP OF COMPETITION ENTRIES AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
12
12.1 All Competition Entries and any accompanying material submitted to Business Fights Poverty will become the property of Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation upon receipt and will not be returned.

12.2 By submitting your Competition entry and any accompanying material, each Entrant agrees to:

  • (a) assign to Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation all intellectual property rights with full title guarantee; and
  • (b)waive all moral rights, in and to the Entrant’s Competition entry and otherwise arising in connection with the entry to which the Entrant may now or at any time in the future be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time and under all similar legislation from time to time in force anywhere in the world

12.3. The Entrant understands that this assignment of title means that Business Fights Poverty Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation are entitled use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the Competition entry and any accompanying materials for such purposes as it deems fit. Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation will have the right to publish, for free, the Competition entry, in whole or in part of it, but this does not mean that the Entrant has won a competition prize.

12.4. The Entrant understands that Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and Standard Chartered Foundation may, but are not required to, make their entry available on their websites (www.businessfightspoverty.org and www.sc.com ) and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the Competition.

12.5. Where an Entrant is aged 16 or 17, the Entrant’s parent or guardian will be deemed to have consented to clauses 12.1 to 12.4 of these terms of conditions on the Entrant’s behalf.

DATA PROTECTION AND PUBLICITY
13
13.1. Any personal data relating to participants will be used solely for the purposes of this Competition and the Futuremakers Forum event by Business Fights Poverty and/or by any agent appointed by it to assist with the Competition’s organisation. Entrants’ data will not be disclosed to a third party other than affiliated delivery partners of the Futuremakers initiative for any other purpose without the individual’s prior consent.

13.2. By entering this promotion, the Entrants consent to the use of their personal data by Business Fights Poverty, Standard Chartered and the Standard Chartered Foundation and/or any agent appointed by it to assist it with the running of the Competition (including publishing your full name and county and/or disclosing it to third parties on request if you are the winner) and any other purposes to which you have consented. 13.3 By entering the Competition, Entrants agree to Business Fights Poverty sending them an invitation to attend the Futuremakers Forum 2021, newsletters and other content or event information which Business Fights Poverty may deem within its legitimate interest to send to Entrants. GENERAL

14.1.  If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, Business Fights Poverty may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude any Entrant from participating in the Competition.

14.2. Business Fights Poverty reserves the right to hold void, suspend, delay, move the dates of, cancel, or amend the Competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

14.3. The Business Fights Poverty logo, the Futuremakers by Standard Chartered logo and Standard Chartered name are registered trademarks.

14.4. These Rules shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any claim, dispute or matter arising under or in connection with these Rules.
