Implementing Public Private Partnerships to Fight Malnutrition

Ten years ago, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) was formed with one key challenge – to end malnutrition in the world’s poorest countries. Our plan was to improve access to healthier foods to those most at risk.

During that time, we’ve reached over 610 million people with nutritious foods to help them reach their full potential. Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable populations through access to affordable, high quality and nutritious foods. Our core approach is to mobilize public and private sectors to develop and distribute high quality nutritious foods and food products to consumers at affordable prices.

We believe innovation and partnership are critical to address this problem sustainably and at scale, and GAIN’s collaborative approach to ending malnutrition has been recognized in several publications as an effective social business model. To build on this, GAIN recently released a series of case stories; to show how its approach achieves impact at scale, and accomplishes goals which no single organization could possibly manage alone.

For example, the Amsterdam Initiative against Malnutrition, supported by GAIN, unites the strengths of The Netherlands-based public and private sectors to protect millions of consumers from hunger and micronutrient deficiencies. Its model is generating substantial interest from leading multinationals, government and research institutions; where each specialist brings its own talents and expertise to the table and works together as a network to target nutrition through market-led solutions.

For our projects, business is an essential component of our work, particularly now, as nutrition is under the spotlight and high on the global agenda. We must continue to work together in order to succeed, and accomplish our mission of ending malnutrition.
